Let me introduce myself...

My name is Aaron and I'm a 2nd year Bachelor of Communication and Media studies student majoring in Marketing. I transferred to UOW at the start of the year after attending UWS.

I absolutely love music and anything related to it. So if you want to have a chat about music or want me to check out some music just let me know and I'll check it out...I'm always up for finding new stuff! I am also a social gamer....basically meaning I'll play some games with friends and my room mates, but will rarely play a game solo.

I have a number of jobs including drum tutor, retail assistant and freelance drummer. They're all quite different and as such keep me interested and motivated in various ways, which is always a good thing!

In terms of the subject how companies use or don't use social media is something that I find rather fascinating, as it can indeed be a very positive marketing tool. I myself have attempted to utilise on line marketing through social networks, particularly through trying to promote my old band, and it is rather interesting to see what is effective and what fails in terms of promotion.

Also of particular interest is how companies are using the internet and social media networks as a way of screening future employees and keeping an eye on current employees. There are numerous stories of people not getting hired because of a drunken video or pictures on their Facebook profile. Even more interesting is people getting fired from their job after photos of them being negligent at work appeared on Facebook.

I guess that's where the debate lies...is it right for companies to do this? It could be argued that social networks provide just an extension of someone's life and therefore the information it provides can be used to make a logical decision on whether to hire a person or not. Then again it can also be argued that it may be a breach of privacy or that personal videos/photos/etc should not be used to evaluate how a person may operate in a work environment. What do you think?

  1. I think among a certain demographic, a persons Facebook page is a true reflection of self. A lot of people see it as their own personal page, and don't really make the connection that unless proper precautions are taken, posting something on your Facebook page is the same as standing in a crowded room and announcing it.
